What do I need to know about owning a teacup, micro, or pet mini pig? Our piglets go home litter box trained, a common question is what type of litter do our piglets use? *Equine Pine Pellets, or, Feline Pine is the safest litter to use for your teacup, mini, or micro pig. Other types of litter are made to clump when wet, causing a blockage internally with your animal if eaten. What does piggy poop look like? Does it smell bad? Piggy poop looks just like small pellets clumped together. Our mini pigs are fed healthy, so a foul smelling poo is not something you willfind in a mini pig that is fed a well balanced, healthy diet. What types of kennels work best when I bring my piggy home? *A kennel that you can bend down and pick up your new piglet out of works best. Always make sure it is piggy proof before putting your baby in there for the first time. Will my new pet pig play with toys? *Piglets love rooting balls and anything they can push around and explore with their nose. Rooting mats are a favorite among piggy parents, too. Make sure nothing they play with can be too small to ingest. Do pigs like to cuddle? *Like any animal, the more love and affection you give it, the more love and affection it will give back. Piggies are no acception. In fact, pigs have four less emotions than humans..making them more capable than most animals in the world to be a furry companion emotionally. That being said, pigs bond STRONGLY to their families. Please be sure when you adopt a pig from any breeder that it is a lifelong long commitment. Rehoming a pig is extremely difficult on them emotionally. What will my pet pig look like when it’s time to go home? *We keep you posted with pictures throughout the entire process of adopting your baby. We ask that you message us and ask us for pictures, we get busy and want to make sure you are staying updated as much as you like. Sometimes the spotted babies can look a little pink when they first get their picture taken, or spots will appear smaller in photos than when they will go home. Sometimes your baby has a bit to grow and mature before you take him/her home, and they are often even prettier when they go home than when we first took their glamour photos! It’s important before you adopt a mini pig that you check to make sure you are allowed to own a pig where you live. Not all towns, cities, villages, subdivisions, and plats allow mini pigs. A lot of places consider mini pigs “livestock” even though they are much smaller and easier to maintain. LOTS OF PLACES do allow them, too. Let’s break it down a bit… Renting: Most landlords do not allow renters to own pet pigs. This is due to inbreeding and farm hogs being bred into mini pigs. If a mini pig is not bred responsibly it will root up walls, floors, carpets, and become extremely destructive. Landlords have had problems with untrained pet pigs being destructive on their property and rarely allow renters to own them. If you rent, CHECK to make sure you are allowed to own a mini pig. We will gladly speak to your landlord and answer any questions they may have. We’re sorry, but we prefer to not adopt out to families that live in apartments. Although each situation is different, an apartment poses lots of problems. A pig needs a yard when older to play, and makes noises (though not cumbersome) that not everyone may appreciate. Owning an apartment leads to rehoming. Living in city limits: If you live in the city and not out in the country, ALWAYS check with your city’s board of zoning to be sure mini pigs are allowed. A lot of cities allow pet pigs, but a lot of cities prefer the owner to have an acre of land, or the pet pig to be under a certain weight. Some cities do not allow pigs. Subdivisions, Platts, & HOA’s: If you live in a subdivision or as us northerners call it, a platt… you might be under the guidelines of an HOA. An HOA stands for “Home Owner’s Association.” An “HOA” may also prevent you from adopting if it is written in the guidelines/rules that a pet pig is considered livestock and not allowed. A quick message to your HOA representative will quickly clear things up and get you a straight answer on whether or not owning a pet pig in your neighborhood will be tolerated. A couple things to remember… ~ALWAYS get everything in writing. Never rely on someone’s word. ~Animal control can be a good source as to whether or not your area is allowed to own a mini pig, but your 100% answer will come from your zoning department. ~If you aren’t sure who to contact, contact us and we will be more than happy to find out who you need to get a hold of.. sometimes it can be tricky. ~NEVER try to own a pig where you aren’t allowed to.
